Effects of Hydrogen Peroxide on Bacterial Viability and Surface Integrity

Paper 13 surface integrity

Effective disinfection should not damage treated surfaces.

Laboratory testing proved that an 8% hydrogen peroxide formulation can deliver strong antimicrobial activity while remaining compatible with common materials.

The study used controlled laboratory methods to evaluate antimicrobial performance. When applied to contaminated surfaces, hydrogen peroxide eliminated two common bacteria, E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, within one hour. No surviving bacteria were detected after treatment, while untreated surfaces showed high levels of contamination. The bacterial reduction exceeded 99.999%, demonstrating consistent antimicrobial effectiveness.

Researchers also examined the effects of repeated or prolonged exposure. Test materials were subjected to demanding conditions, including overnight treatment, multi-day immersion, repeated drying and re-immersion cycles, and continuous exposure for up to seven days.

Across all conditions, no visible changes in appearance, discolouration, or surface degradation were observed compared with untreated controls. These findings suggest that hydrogen peroxide can provide high-level surface disinfection while maintaining the integrity and appearance of treated materials, even with repeated use.
